How our emotions influence our social commitments?

Objectives:

  • Acknowledging to what extend our emotions influence our commitment in society
  • Revealing the diverse ways we react and deal with a same situation
  • Getting inspired by other's point of views, encouraging collective intelligence
  • Allowing everyone to express.

Scenario

Duration: 45 minutes to 1 hour.

First introduce the participants to the positioning exercise. The idea is to take position regarding one tricky situation by using 2 axis. There are no good or bad answers. The objective is to represent how we react in real life in order to open an discussion on the “WHYs” and “HOWs”.

State the situation and ask the participants to take position regarding the way they feel (vertical axis) and the way they act (horizontal axis).
When everybody has taken position, invite 4 volunteers to explain theirs. Choose preferably people whose position are radically different and people who usually don't express themselves that much in the group.

Situation 1: An association distributes evening meals for migrants.

  • I feel confident / I don't feel confident (vertical axis)
  • I go there / I don't go there (horizontal axis).

Situation 2: A non-violent direct action is proposed by an activist group. I don't know what we are going to do.

  • I am afraid / I am not afraid (vertical axis)
  • I participate / I don't participate (horizontal axis).

Material required

  • Painting tape or chalk to draw the axis on the ground
  • A big room to move in the space
  • 4 A4 / situation to precise the meaning of the axis.
