What are stereotypes and how do they affect us? Working on national stereotypes to grab the issues at stake

Objectives

  • Understanding what stereotypes mean
  • Acknowledging the difference between the stereotypes we have about our fellow citizens and the way other countries see us
  • Understanding the emotions stereotypes can make emerge in us

Scenario

Duration : ~1 hour 30 minutes

> Step 1 (50 minutes)

Divide the group into national teams. Choose a color for each team (ex: France - blue / Spain - Red / German - Green, etc.). Give to each team paper sheets of the colors of the nationalities that are present. For 30 minutes, ask each national team to discuss the stereotypes they have about the other nationalities that are present and to write them down on the corresponding paper. They also need to write on the paper assigned to their own nationality the stereotypes they have about their fellow citizens.

Gather all the papers and give to each national group the papers that are related to their nationality. Give them a moment (around 20 minutes) to read everything and exchange ideas about it. What stereotype seems justified for them or not and talk about how emotionally these stereotypes affect them, what emotion they generate to them.

> Step 2 (5 minutes/national group)

Gather all the participants and give 5 minutes to each national team to share what has been expressed within their group. Did they notice differences between the stereotypes they have about their fellow citizen and the stereotypes the others have regarding them? Do they believe the stated stereotypes match with reality? What are they based on? As the concerned group, how do they feel about what was said?

> Step 3 (10 minutes)

As a conclusion, give a definition about stereotypes, prejudice and discrimination and explain how they are formed :

* Stereotypes consist basically in shared beliefs or thoughts about a particular human group. A stereotype is an ensemble of characteristics that sums up a human group usually in terms of behaviour, habits, etc.

* A prejudice is a judgement we make about another person or other people without really knowing them. Prejudices can be negative or positive in character. Prejudices are learned as part of our socialisation process and they are very difficult to modify or eradicate. Therefore it is important that we are aware that we have them.

* Discrimination is the act of making unjustified distinctions between people based on the groups, classes, or other categories to which they belong or are perceived to belong. People may be discriminated on the basis of race, gender, age, religion, or sexual orientation, as well as other categories. Discrimination especially occurs when individuals or groups are unfairly treated in a way which is worse than other people are treated, on the basis of their actual or perceived membership in certain groups or social categories. It involves restricting members of one group from opportunities or privileges that are available to members of another group.
